To date, there has been little research conducted on the career satisfaction of genetic counselors. There are even fewer data regarding how satisfied genetic counselor' spouses or significant others are with the genetic counseling career. Previous research has shown a relationship between job satisfaction and satisfaction with one's home life. Additionally, decreased job satisfaction could be a risk factor for burnout or other phenomenon that could affect one's personal or professional life. The aim of this study was two-fold: to determine whether or not genetic counselors and their spouses were satisfied with the genetic counselor's career, and to determine what factors, if any, affect satisfaction. 428 genetic counselors and 171 spouses of genetic counselors completed an online survey asking questions about demographics, social and career factors, and overall satisfaction with the genetic counseling career. The genetic counselors also took the Professional Quality of Life Survey to measure levels of burnout, secondary traumatic stress, and compassion satisfaction. This study found that 94.1% of genetic counselors and 95.4% of spouses of genetic counselors reported that they were overall satisfied with the genetic counseling career. There were no significant associations between career or demographic factors and overall satisfaction of the genetic counselor or their spouse. However, certain factors, such as living in a preferred geographic location, having one's financial expectations meet, and having enough time for hobbies and quality time with one's spouse, had significant impacts on other questions related to satisfaction.
