Abstract:
Introduction: Quantitative Electroencephalography (QEEG) reports have emerged as a diagnostic tool capable of gathering assessment data pertinent to multiple clinical disciplines. While commonly utilized among neurofeedback practitioners, interpretation of QEEG reports sometimes lacks consistency between practitioners.
Methods: Four participants were provided a sample QEEG report and asked to form interpretations of the data. A standardized interview with common questions was conducted, which assessed relevant professional experience and interpretations of the sample QEEG report.
Results: The overarching theme shaping the results of this dissertation was the amount of professional experience in utilizing QEEG reports. More experience with QEEG reports was correlated with increased citation of research authority figures informing interpretations, increased diagnostic weight given to QEEG reports among total assessment, and increased interest in correlating QEEG data with neuroanatomical structure and function. All participants expressed that QEEG data should be correlated with client symptoms.
Discussion: The structure and nature of one's clinical practice seemed to influence level of diagnostic reliance upon QEEG reports. In addition, the evolving practice of utilizing QEEG reports in conjunction with neurofeedback was also discussed in relevance to this study. Common cerebral sites referenced by participants were also presented.
