For my culminating thesis project towards completion of my MFA in Television, Film and Theatre (TVFT) Acting Option, I performed three separate roles in Loft Ensemble Theatre Company's production of the swashbuckling comedy Long Joan Silver by Arthur M. Jolly from February 17 -- April 9, 2017. Long Joan Silver is a broadly comedic, gender-swapping, theatrical adaptation of the novel Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. In this adaptation, the pirates have been rewritten as female characters in an effort to explore the conflicts that arise when typical patriarchal gender dynamics are challenged or rejected entirely. I took on three separate roles for the production: Long Joan Silver, Jennifer Gunn, and an unnamed, bloodthirsty pirate. Each role posed distinct challenges and opportunities to showcase the skills I have acquired in the TVFT MFA program, specifically, my training in Acting Studio I, II & III, Commedia Dell'Arte, and Barrantes' Technique for Extended Vocal Range, as well as my eleven years of experience as a stage combat performer. I will discuss how I incorporated this training into my work as well as my approach for a challenge not addressed in my MFA training: the use of a dialect. In reflecting on my process, I will also discuss how my feminist perspective influenced my work in this production and how I will bring that perspective into my future work.
