Abstract:
Individuals who are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and are eligible for pancreatic resection are susceptible to multiple symptoms including loss of appetite, sarcopenia, and malnutrition. This is a sub-analysis of a much larger randomized controlled trial that looks to evaluate post-operative outcomes in patients that will be going through a pancreaticoduodenectomy as a means of surgical treatment for their pancreatic cancer. During this study the patients will be partaking in a physical activity and nutrition intervention. Currently, individuals with pancreatic cancer have a low survival rate and poor postoperative outcomes. By analyzing baseline data that focused on frailty, lean muscle mass, and health-related quality of life it was thought that we could determine possible associations between frailty and quality of life as well as associations between quantified lean muscle mass and quality of life. After analyzing the baseline data for this sub-analysis there were no statistically significant findings. It is possible that the lack of significant findings is due to the sub-analysis being underpowered and multiple study participants missing multiple items of data.
