The purpose of this research was to assess the quality of life in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) as defined by diabetes life satisfaction, disease impact, and worries about diabetes. This research compared participants who were managing their blood glucose by use of multiple daily injections (MDI) or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). This study was conducted with males and females (10-19 years), diagnosed with T1DM for a minimum of 1 year. Participants were recruited voluntarily through two diabetes support groups in Canada. Data were collected online through the completion of the Diabetes Quality of Life for Youths (DQOLY) questionnaire at a location of convenience. A total of 26 surveys met the inclusion criteria; descriptive statistics were used to express characteristics of the population. Adolescents reported an overall good quality of life, reflected by the total mean DQOLY score of 106. An independent sample t-test was used to examine if there was a difference between the two treatment methods in quality of life. Participants managing their blood glucose by use of CSII reported lower total scores compared to those using MDI, the difference was meaningful but not statically significant. Findings imply that a larger sample size might yield significant differences. Future research should replicate this study using a larger sample to reduce the risk of a type 2 error. Findings may assist healthcare professionals working with youth to better understand the impact of demands and burdens of diabetes care during this critical time period.
