Musicians from North American, Central American, and South American countries possess a long history of utilizing their music to illuminate injustice and to advocate for social, political and economic equality. Using selected works from the United States, Mexico, Chile and Argentina, this thesis project provides an in-depth study of this music, including its history, musical analysis, and performance practices. For the performance component, this project also includes a year-long collaboration with the dA Center for the Arts, a non-profit Arts Center in Pomona, California, during which time the author organized and directed a children's choir and performed a benefit concert at the dA, at which these selected pieces were performed publically. This project and the collaboration with the dA Center for the Arts can also serve as a model for other artists seeking to work with local organizations to promote and provide accessible and socially-conscious arts programming to underserved communities.
