Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the thought process of preschooler teachers and how their interpretation of racism relates to the curriculum they teach. Three preschool teachers were interviewed for this study. From the three interviews, data showed that the participants describe racism differently and that a teacher's racial identity and cultural background does play a part in how they create and plan curriculum for their classroom. It also influenced how they interact with their colleagues, parents, and the children they teach. The least effective way to combat racism is by ignoring it when actions of racism happen or when children bring the subject up. The most effective way to combat racism in the classroom is to instead focus more of our attention on promoting pride in young children and teaching them about being kind to one another. Administration and parents are the biggest obstacles in my participants' experiences when implementing new curriculum or practices. The role of teachers plays a big part in supporting young children who are still navigating the idea of racism and how it affects them in society.
