Abstract:
The study examined long-distance relational partners and the choices they make regarding media use while in conflict with their partner, particularly related to participant conflict style. Idealistic distortion, reminiscent thinking, future idealization and commitment were also considered. Results indicated that idealistic distortion was directly related to both reminiscent thinking and idealization. Idealization was not related to avoidance of conflict. Partners reporting high levels of idealization tend to choose FaceTime/video calling when in conflict with their partners, while highly committed partners tend to choose phone calls and avoid using email. Despite these differences in choice, idealization and commitment are directly related. Avoidance strategies mediate the relationship between commitment and texting, while integrative strategy use mediates the relationship between email use and both commitment and idealization. The results are discussed in the context of long-distance relationships, and future research opportunities are proposed.
