Abstract:
This qualitative study examined Chinese undergraduate students' perceptions of their interpersonal communication experiences in American higher education institutions. The researcher interviewed eight Chinese undergraduate students in the United States. Participants discussed the differences of their interpersonal communication experiences with students and teachers between Chinese and American classrooms. They also talked about the factors that influence their interpersonal communication experiences in the U.S. Participants from different departments had diverse opinions on this topic. They shared their lived experiences with detailed stories on issues and challenges they had encountered along with lessons learned for Chinese international students. This study included recommendations for future research and addressed instructional implications for American higher education professionals to improve their practice and assist Chinese international students to succeed in college.
