Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to explore how United States police officers experience, interpret, and respond to being the subject of a disciplinary process. Therefore, the research questions for this study was how United States police officers experience, interpret, and respond to being the subject of a disciplinary process. Theories of stress and anxiety as they relate to modern law enforcement organizations provided the theoretical foundations for this study. In keeping with qualitative constructivist grounded theory methods, a purposeful sample of 10 current or former law enforcement officers were interviewed by the researcher. The resulting interview transcripts were then subjected to robust thematic analysis. Study results included the documentation of specific organizational stressors, a model of the disciplinary process, recognition of a disciplinary continuum within police organizations, and the police fratricide theory. This study found a disciplinary continuum exists which extends beyond legitimate disciplinary practices. The disciplinary continuum encompasses legitimate, illegitimate, and baboon disciplinary processes. Further, the police fratricide theory suggests that once a police administrator begins to use illegitimate or baboon disciplinary practices, he or she seldom attempts to retrain or correct a subject officer's behavior but rather sets on a course to terminate or force the subject officer from the agency or law enforcement all together. As a result, good officers are being forced out of law enforcement by administrators with unlimited power and control.
