Abstract:
Foreign Language Anxiety (FLA) can significantly impact student's overall achievement, both socially and academically. This dissertation presents the results of a review of the literature about FLA among international students from the following Confucian-influenced East Asian countries: China, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. The review includes information about previous studies regarding the nature of FLA, diagnostic considerations, sociocultural factors (i.e., Confucianism, acculturation) associated with FLA, directions for future studies, as well as issues impacting research with this population. Appropriate educational and psychological interventions can help decrease FLA among international students and support their social adjustment and academic success. Clinical implications for professionals who work with this population are provided.
