Therapy animal programs are common throughout many stages of the life: childhood, young adult years, and senior years. In early childhood, kids will read to therapy animals in order to improve their reading skills and confidence. In our young adult years, therapy animals are found on college campuses helping students alleviate the stress of final exams. Finally, therapy animals are common in senior living facilities, which has led to improvements in the cognitive and physical capabilities of the older population. Interestingly enough, one age group missing is middle-aged. This work sets out to increase the use of therapy animals in the setting where most middle-aged people spend their time: the workplace. A common problem the workforce faces is stress. Employers are implementing wellness programs to not only help address stress, but also improve the overall health of their employees. This research presents further details on the impacts of employee stress, wellness programs, and the use of therapy animals. By diving deeper into the existing literature, a new model was created to help workplaces implement a pet therapy program within their existing wellness program.
