Abstract:
The aim of this study was to identify the impact of video games on the behaviors of children of late childhood stage (9-11) years in Jordan. The study is a descriptive one, and used the survey approach and a questionnaire which included a set of questions related to the objectives of the study to collect information from the study population. Consisted of (120) items, the questionnaire was distributed to intentional sample of students from public and private schools in the capital city of Amman. Two of the questionnaires were excluded because they did not meet the conditions and validity of the answer. Appropriate statistical means were used to answer the study questions.
The study found a number of findings, the most important of which are: 1. Changing the stereotype in the minds of some, namely, that video games affect male children; while the differences in the negative effects were the share of females more than males in playing video games, as males can leave the house and play outside of it, unlike females who cannot play outdoors, and therefore try to make up for this by playing video games indoors, resulting in their being isolated from friends and family members. 2. There are many positive effects resulting from children's playing video games. The study showed, even from the point of view of the children themselves, that playing video games increases the child's mental abilities, and contributes to the breadth of their imagination and their way of thinking, in addition to the new information and ideas laid before them. 3. The positive effect of these games lies in developing children's creative thinking and helping them make new friends online, as most games require players to be connected online, shared by a number of virtual world players from around the world, which allows for the expansion of the child's knowledge circle, and making new friends. 4. There are some negative effects resulting from the children's playing video games such as: the sense of isolation, introversion, keeping away from the traditional (or real life) friends, and members of their family, and thus creation of an addictive relationship between the child and such devices. 5. The child's getting used to satisfy their social needs accompanied by the characters of video games, makes them aggressive, and constantly tense, not to mention that most games is based on competition. So, in the case of winning they feel happy, excited and fervid, but in the case of losing they feel angry, frustrated and resentful, which increases their aggression and affects their personality and the way they treat their peers or other family members. 6. There is a correlation between playing video games and low educational achievement of children, as the imbalance lies in spending long hours by the child in front of these devices and playing video games, which results in waking up late and not getting enough sleep hours, and therefore their unwillingness to go to School, and study their lessons, and school activities in a healthy manner. 7. The children at this age stage (subject of the study) learn faster, therefore, the study found that those who play video games from among children learn inappropriate language that contain violent words due to their playing the game frequently on a daily basis and use such words especially in cases of loss. 8. Video games may be harmful to the health of children, such as back pain, shortness or weakness of sight, which force them to wear glasses at a young age due to their exposure to electromagnetic radiation transmitted from the game. This is in addition to the child's eye movement to follow all details of the game causing fatigue to the eyes. 9. The study showed that 93% of the children exercise sports, which means that video games do not keep them away from sports and recreational activities. This is in addition to their spending more than six hours with their families, which indicates that families are keen to practice various family activities, as well as paying attention to their children getting the physical comfort they need, by sleeping early.
