Abstract:
This clinical dissertation focuses on the topic of posttraumatic growth (PTG) among earthquake survivors living with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). There has been little research conducted on PTG related to the trauma of earthquakes, and the existing studies used participants primarily in areas impacted by earthquakes (i.e., Wenchuan, Taiwan, etc.). Destructive earthquakes within Asian cultures prompted studies that provide insight into trauma recovery and personal growth. Among Western cultures, California will likely be affected by predicted earthquakes from the San Andreas fault line. This doctoral dissertation critically reviews the empirical literature on the topic of PTG from a sociocultural, biological, and clinical perspective. The gathered research and summary of literature were integrated into the creation of a poster presentation that was exhibited to a group of mental health professionals at the Institute on Violence, Abuse, and Trauma conference in August 2015. The purpose of the poster presentation was to expand their insight into the novel concept, learn of specific skills used in clinical practice to elicit PTG, and enhance awareness of the issue of preparing for growth, as physical, psychological, and social destruction from earthquakes within Eastern regions can be generalized towards experiences of trauma from future earthquakes that may occur in Western regions. This dissertation offers recommendations for minimizing the gap between research practice along with a discussion of cultural considerations and suggestions for the integration of longitudinal designs into the exploration of PTG among earthquake survivors with PTSS.
