Research suggests that high school aged individuals with developmental disabilities are at a higher likelihood of lacking the prosocial behaviors necessary for successful transition into post high school life and a work environment. Decreased vocational success often leads to increased likelihood of mental health issues for individuals with developmental disabilities, as well decreased overall life satisfaction. Therefore, this study looked at the use of video modeling (VM) using non-disabled peers to provide instruction on beginning and advanced level socials skills as a possible tool to assist developmentally disabled adolescent students in applying social skills successfully to a vocational setting. Video modeling (VM) was added to the use of the social skills curriculum, Skillstreaming the Adolescent (McGinnis, Sprafkin, Gershaw, & Klein, 2012), to provide training, in a one-group, repeated measures pretest-posttest research design, testing the ability of individuals to gain prosocial skills, as well as the ability for those skills to generalize into the vocational setting. Descriptive statistics and statistical analysis indicated mixed results with statistically significant gains respective to individual participants and skills. Suggestions for future research and the impact of results for individuals with developmental disabilities are also discussed.
