Özet
The problem of ineffective communication by leaders in the hospitality industry negatively impacts the overall success of organizations. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore effective communications strategies used by leaders of multinational corporations in the hospitality industry. The research questions posed were: What are the lived experiences of leaders of multinational corporations in the hospitality industry regarding the effective communication strategies? What are the informed perceptions of leaders of multinational corporations in the hospitality industry regarding effective communication strategies? The conceptual framework for this study was the leader-member exchange. Participants for the study consisted of hospitality industry leaders. Ten participants answered eight semistructured questions during face-to-face interviews. Data analysis indicated thematic awareness of two primary themes and additional subthemes. The primary theme of leader-member exchange indicated three subthemes: teamwork, knowledge sharing, and empowerment. The primary theme of communication technique also indicated three subthemes: the tone of voice, face-to-face communication, redundancy. The findings of this study increased both the practitioner and scholarly bodies of knowledge while supporting the need for further practitioner research on the implications of effective communication strategies via leader-member exchange and effective communication techniques that influence productivity in the hospitality industry. From a scholarly perspective, this research showed leaders and managers could improve communications between leaders and subordinates within the organization by implementing strategies that promote knowledge sharing, empowerment, teamwork, face-to-face communication, redundancy, and respectful tone of voice.
