Currently, the most prominent models for the treatment of binge-eating behaviors are cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy. However, while current treatments of binge-eating disorders often maintain their objective on an individual's overt eating behaviors, they do not address the underlying, covert mechanisms which are involved in the development and maintenance of binge-eating behaviors. This may contribute to the high rate of relapse among such persons, and may explain the resistance to treatment among an individual's binge-eating behaviors. This clinical dissertation proposed a model for the treatment of binge-eating behaviors with considerable attention to the individual's internal conflicts that manifest as binge-eating behaviors. The model combined Kohut's (1971) model of development of the self and Cowan and Heselmeyer's (2011) developmental perspective on dissociative functioning. Attention to overt manifestations of binge-eating behaviors was included in the model's later phases as well as mindfulness-based techniques, mentalization-based treatment, and insight into emotion regulation. By illuminating the covert mechanisms within the individual's binge-eating behaviors, clinicians may be more prepared to address latent trauma and dissociative elements underlying the eating disordered behavior.
