Özet
The writings of the Apostle Paul have long held a prominent place in both New Testament studies and the Christian faith. Recently, however, a new philosophical approach to Paul's writings has appropriated the Apostle's words for the nontheistic, political ends of the new left. This Pauline turn is coordinate with the rise in "political theology" as a critical discourse outside of the Christian academy and addresses itself to inequitable late modern political structures. This project enters into a charitable conversation with this new approach to Paul. The new approach raises new questions in need of a theological response. Though I ultimately find certain elements of the new approach wanting, such as elements of materialism and certain ideological commitments, this project argues that the questions they raise take even confessional political theology in new directions. This project argues that a compliment this new approach is Paul's apocalyptic theology. Pauline apocalyptic emphasizes the already disruptive nature of the incarnation, crucifixion, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth that wrests humanity from under the sovereignty of the fallen powers and places them under the Lordship of Christ. Furthermore, apocalyptic is nourished by the promise of the eschatological hope of the not yet finished work of Christ. The church is called forth into being in the tension of the present Lordship of Christ and the not yet transformation of the cosmos. Such a tension begets practices that supplement the weaknesses of the new approach. Ultimately the apocalyptic Paul is the one who can adequately address the political questions raised in late modernity.
