Özet
Research shows that most individuals with I/DD have an employment longevity rate of less than a year due to many negative stigmas that accompany the disability. This qualitative case study explored employment retention strategies implemented by human resource professional (HRPs) and manager/program coordinators (MPCs) for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) as an approach to eliminate employment barriers. Interviews with seven HRPs MPCs from four non-profit organizations in the state of Florida were conducted. Using a case study design, HRPs and MPCs shared their experiences and perspectives on how they attempt to eliminate employment barriers through the use of employment strategies. The interview questions focused on the application of effective employment retention strategies used to retain individuals with mild I/DD within an integrated employment setting for one year or longer. Common words, phrases, and patterns were derived from the study participants' responses. A multi-analysis process, consisting of a manual analysis and the utilization of the NVivo 10 Software, was performed to ensure accuracy and consistency of data. Key findings from the research study resulted in the following themes: (1) there is a need to build awareness with organizational leader awareness; (2) there is a need to create more "preferred employers"; (3) there is a need to familiarize organizational leaders with available resources and reasonable accommodations; and (4) there is a need for 360- degree communication.
