Özet
One of the most common reasons for participation in sports is the need to feel like part of the team. Being a part of the team offers cohesion, which is a factor in determining the success of the team and the performance of the team. The specific problem, which can affect athletic teams, is that team's performance could suffer because of the lack of team outcome confidence and the lack of collective efficacy over time. Social cognitive theory highlights that efficacy beliefs are important factors within human functioning. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to examine the relationship between a team's collective efficacy and their performance. The sample consisted of players from a small, NCAA Division II liberal arts institution located in eastern North Carolina. The athletes participate in sports such as basketball, lacrosse, softball, soccer, baseball, and volleyball since they depend on the collective efforts of the group to win. Individual sports, such as cross country and golf, where there are individual winners were not included. Out of the 10 group sports mentioned, a sample of two players per team were asked to participate in the research. The players represented various grades and playing experience. The data collection was a 10-question questionnaire that was emailed to the respective participants; not including individual sports teams (e.g. cross country, track & field, tennis, and golf). The head coaches of the team sports also had the questionnaire emailed to them. Analysis revealed that teams with higher levels of cohesion and collective efficacy had higher success and greater performance. Future studies could research additional team sports and also how cohesion and efficacy impacts individual sports.
