Özet
This dissertation project focuses on risk and protective factors for child delinquency. The literature mentioned and discussed is the most up-to-date information related to the risks that increase the likelihood for early behavioral issues and later delinquency. Additionally, interventions and empirically based practices are thoroughly reviewed to offer insight on the options available at this time that have proven efficient for working with a juvenile and their families. Understanding the risks for child delinquency is important because the research has shown that early intervention increases the probability of eradicating these behaviors before the child becomes a chronic offender. Additionally, mass incarceration, as well as continuously increasing incarceration rates, have caused a financial burden on taxpayers and have impacted the safety and progress of many racial/minority communities. Incarceration is an issue that impacts the community of the United States. However, underserved communities are affected more, placing many families in impoverished living conditions and causing detrimental effects to the healthy development of many children. There is a considerable gap in training related to working with forensic populations and working with families and children in the welfare and judicial systems. By understanding the risks for offending and by learning of early intervention strategies, clinicians and other health professionals may feel more empowered to work with this population and advocate for their needs.
