Özet
This dissertation has consisted of two studies. Study one is to know the prevalence of e-cigarettes use among youth in the years 2011--2015. Study two is to investigate the significant factors associated with e-cigarette smoking. Internal Review Board has granted approval to conduct this study.

Abstract 1: Background: Currently electronic cigarettes are becoming popular and being debated concerning their role in smoking cessation. The electronic cigarette also known as e-cigarette, which is electronic nicotine delivery system. A mechanical device designed to mimic regular cigarettes, looks like conventional cigarette, delivers nicotine through inhaling vapors without burning tobacco. Globally, as well as in the US, tobacco smoking has been the leading cause of preventable death (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014). In the USA, in the year 2015, an estimated 5 million middle and high school students were current users of all kinds of tobacco products, out of which 3 million students used e-cigarettes (Tushar Singh 2015).

Objective: To assess the prevalence of e-cigarette use among youth.

Methods: National Youth Tobacco Survey (NYTS) data is used. Peer-reviewed articles from 2000 to 2016 were identified through electronic database Medline, and Pub-Med on the electronic cigarettes were reviewed and analyzed.

Results: The trend of e-cigarette use has been increasing steeply among youth. It is observed that smoking incidence would rise with the grade. In the year 2015, about 45% of 12th graders experimented e-cigarettes. A total of 24.3% females and 29.3% male students reported experimented e-cigarettes in the year 2015. Significantly more Mexicans, and Native Hawaiians, and fewer Asians tried e-cigarettes compared to the rest. There was no significant difference in experimenting e-cigarettes among Whites versus non-whites and African American versus non-African Americans.

Conclusions: Our finding emphasizes the need to educate how to reduce the prevalence of e-cigarettes use. Since the prevalence of e-cigarette is enormously increasing over the past years, proper intervention programs should be implemented in schools for the benefit of targeted youth.

Abstract II: Since last decade electronic cigarettes are becoming popular and have been progressively marketed in the US. Currently, an extensive range of e-cigarettes, more than 400 brands are increasingly available in open market. It is easily accessible online to the youth irrespective of their age. Youth-targeted advertising with dazzling images of e-cigarettes has been rising experimentation. Comprehending the advertising claims encountered by young customers is significant. Electronic devices sold as a tobacco delivery device need to be regulated.

Objective: Is to determine the factors associated with e-cigarette use.

Methods: NYTS data is retrieved from CDC website and analyzed using software R.

Results: Significant increase use of e-cigarettes is due to perceived peer and family approval. But ads on TV and movies famous personalities smoking do not exert significant influence on youth.

Conclusion: Restricting youth-targeted advertising with glamorous images of e-cigarettes may limit the rising experimentation and use of e-cigarettes in young people. Perceived non-harm in e-cigarettes is a factor driving usage. Proper education to the youth and families is necessary.
