Özet
Terror Management Theory (TMT) predicts that reminders of death, or mortality salience (MS), increases ingroup identification and leads to more negative evaluations of individuals whose behaviors or appearance do not align with the values of the dominant culture. Moreover, MS may increase stereotypic cognition, leading to negative evaluations of marginalized individuals whose appearance or behavior do not fit common stereotypes. Accordingly, this study sought to test whether MS affects the responses of clinically active psychotherapists to transgender clients whose appearance did not align with their identified gender. Participants (N = 571) were asked to complete an online survey. The survey presented one group of psychotherapists with a death-related questionnaire, and a comparison group with a questionnaire concerning dental pain. Participants then responded to a written fictional clinical vignette accompanied by one of two portraits of a male-identified transgender individual. One portrait exhibited a traditionally feminine appearance (identified-gender-incongruent), and the other exhibited a traditionally masculine appearance (identified-gender-congruent). This investigator hypothesized that psychotherapists high in need for closure would respond most negatively to the client in the mortality-salient/identified-gender-incongruent condition. Results of the primary analysis were inconclusive. However, exploratory analyses suggested possible directions for future research into therapist attitudes towards transgender clients. Finally, this investigator considers implications for clinical practice and training.
