Maternal and postpartum depression is considered a social problem and a public health issue because of its high prevalence in women and because of the negative consequences that it brings to both the mother and her family (Leis et al., 2009). The term maternal depression incorporates a range of conditions that can affect women during pregnancy and up to one year postpartum (National Institute for health Care Management, 2010). Maternal depression incorporates prenatal depression, baby blues, postpartum depression, and postpartum psychosis (National Institute for health Care Management, 2010). This project was guided by two questions, 1.) What factors are associated with maternal and postpartum depression among women? 2.) What effect does psychological interventions have on addressing maternal and postpartum depression in women? Numerous studies reveal race, age, marital status, intimate partner violence, social status, and food insecurity are factors that contribute to maternal depression. Results indicated CBT is an effective intervention to treating maternal depression as well as interpersonal therapy. In addition, several studies found that community level parenting interventions such as Fortaleza Familiares (FF), Mom Power (MP), and Practical Resources for Effective Postpartum Parenting (PREPP).
