Özet
The field of robotics provides theoretical, computational, and hardware tools that can be applied to a wide range of problems in other domains. For instance, robotics provides a comprehensive framework for measuring and describing complex kinematic and dynamic systems. As such, robotics entails the ollective mastery of many fields including mechanical and electrical design, computer programming, design of control systems, and user/field testing. This thesis spans these disciplines through the inclusion of multiple projects. Specifically, system integration is the underlying process to linking sub-systems into one integrated system by utilizing a variety of techniques and applications. This thesis details the design and characterization of three electomechanical systems designed to enable various scientific endeavors. The first piece was developed to aid clinical investigations conducted at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Departmentof Orthopedics. The second segment was the characterization of force feedback controlling dynamics of artificial fingers for an amputee. The final project involved the design and characterization of a tool for controlled release impact testing requested by Los Alamos National Laboratories (LANL).

The use of high-tech approaches to solving these problems, compared to the use of simple or commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware, is deliberate for the sake of providing levels of performance and safety that would not otherwise be attainable. Depending on the situation, elements must be approached with more caution to insure both accuracy and precision. Robotics or mechatronics provide he essential resources for developing specialized hardware designed for any task presented.
