Özet
Recent research reports strongly suggest that to many patients, religion and spirituality are resources that help them cope with the stresses in life. Many psychologists now believe that religion and spirituality are important in the life of their patients. Religion is institutionalized spirituality. Recent studies show that religious beliefs and practices are supportive to cope with stresses in life and are beneficial to mental health. Recent research suggested that people feel and believe that spirituality/religion provides their lives with purpose and meaning. The main purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between spirituality (measured by spiritual well-being and religious coping styles) and mental health (measured by depression and anxiety) across the adult lifespan. In addition, the present study sought to establish the association between related spirituality measures (spiritual experience and strength of religious faith) and other mental health issues (satisfaction with life and self-efficacy). The study assessed the relationship between spirituality and mental health from an empirical point of view consistent with Benito et al., 2014; Brown, Chen et al., 2013; Dworsky et al., 2012; and Poreira-Almeida et al., 2014 who have suggested further empirical studies of this relationship. The study utilized an anonymous online survey involving a demographics questionnaire. The results confirmed hypothesized relationships between spirituality and mental health across the adult lifespan. Thus, contribution is made towards making more explicit the ways in which key aspects of spirituality such as transcendence, meaning and purpose, connectedness, hope, and faith, work to produce health benefits in terms of prevention, recovery from illness, or coping with illness. These results were discussed within the context of counseling psychology. The limitations and implications of this study, suggestions for future research, and suggestions for psychotherapy training were also noted.
