Özet
One hundred African American/Black participants identified barriers to mental health help seeking on Amazon.com's Mechanical Turk platform. These barriers were then used to create a 5-minute intervention video aimed at increasing interest in seeking mental health services, increasing favorable beliefs regarding mental health services, and decreasing stigma associated with mental health help seeking. Two hundred African American/Black participants were randomly assigned to either control or intervention condition. Despite creation of a culturally appropriate outreach method, and controlling for demographics known to play a role in mental health help seeking attitudes (e.g. age, gender, previous exposure to counseling), the intervention did not change African American/Black help seeking attitudes. Although the general attitude about mental health help seeking seems to be ameliorating, we posit the ineffectiveness of treatment may likely be a result of intercultural and historical phenomena that place a divide between African American/Black people and the mostly White mental health world.
