In this dissertation we investigated working memory components, as theorized by Baddeley (2001), within the California Verbal Learning Test. The exploratory analysis investigated relationships among variables from the CVLT, Benton's Serial Digit Learning Test-9 and Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised. Archival data included 387 veterans for hypothesis one, and 197 veterans for hypotheses two and three. The average age for the 387 sample was 48.7, and 50.4 years for the 197 sample. The average education level for the 387 sample was 13.2 years. The average education level for the 197 sample was 13 years.
Hypothesis one explored the relationship between the established three factor working memory model within the SDL9, and the WAIS-R. Research showed that the phonological loop (acoustic memory), central executive (complex problem solving) andepisodic buffer (long-term/multiple-sensory memory) could be identified within three parts of the SDL9 (Mansoor, 2011). Effects of the demographic variables, education and age, were also explored. The second hypothesis investigated the relationship between Baddeley's working memory model and the CVLT List A trials (non-rote memory), along with the WAIS-R. The third hypothesis looked at how the Serial Cluster Ratio (rote memory) of the CVLT may relate to working memory, WAIS-R and demographic variables.
Results revealed attention (FFD), a WAIS-R factorial, relates to the central executive and that the phonological loop is represented by SDL9. It was also discovered that age has an inverse relationship with cognitive processes that are related to the episodic buffer. An additional finding indicated that education has a positive effect on rapid rote memory efficiency. Findings indicated that the episodic buffer is important for memory on CVLT List A Trial (1-5) performance level that suggests the cognitive processes involved with this part of the test may require complex long term memories. These long term memories may aid the short term memory processing of rapid memory of words that do not require rote memory. The last analysis established a relationship between CVLT Serial Cluster Ratio (rote memory) and the phonological loop, which indicates a passive memory process that relies on trial and error learning with basic rehearsal.
