Research has shown that adolescents and young adults with social anxiety (SA) struggle with relationships and interpersonal interactions. In the era of social media, it is important to understand the relationship between these interpersonal deficits and online interactions. This review critically examines existing research on the relationship between social networking site (SNS) use and SA in adolescents and young adults. The purpose of this analysis is to further existing knowledge on how SA influences SNS habits and perceptions, and understand whether SNS use ultimately benefits socially anxious individuals.
Twenty-eight studies met inclusion criteria and are reviewed in this analysis. Preliminary research indicates that socially anxious individuals perceive unique benefits and advantages from SNSs, and attempt to compensate online for poor in-person social interactions. However, some evidence suggests that this leads to problematic Internet use and negative offline outcomes. As such, SNSs ultimately benefit socially competent adolescents and young adults more than their socially anxious counterparts. Results are synthesized through a conceptual model, which proposes explanations for this outcome.
SNSs carry the potential to advance mental health literacy, provide psychoeducation and resources about SA, and be utilized in the identification and treatment of SA. Future research should examine various behaviors and uses of modern day SNSs, involve diverse populations, and utilize longitudinal designs to determine causality.
