Anxiety and depression are forms of mental illness that are commonly diagnosed, but the mechanisms behind their development and maintenance are not well understood. Current diagnostic classification systems separate depression and anxiety into distinct categories, but the two disorders are highly comorbid and share a multitude of symptoms. Taking a transdiagnostic dimensional approach to the classification of the two disorders may elucidate their etiologies and provide foundations for the advancement of new mental health treatments. Evidence from the literature suggests that the development and maintenance of depression and anxiety involves an interaction between abilities in executive function (EF), a higher-order cognitive domain responsible for organizing behaviors and regulating emotions, and repetitive thinking patterns (RTPs) such as rumination and worry. However, the precise nature and structure of EF and RTPs remains unclear despite significant research in these areas. The goal of the present dissertation was to uncover the transdiagnostic risk factors of depression and anxiety by identifying viable models of EF and RTPs and testing how EF moderated the relationships between RTPs and negative affect (a common feature of depression and anxiety). High levels of RTPs were associated with high negative affect, and multiple patterns of EF deficits were found to enhance this association, establishing both EF dysfunction and RTPs as transdiagnostic risk factors for depression and anxiety. Treatments targeting EF are likely to be effective added interventions to psychotherapy for disorders associated with RTPs.
