Özet:
Grounded in Learned Helplessness Theory, this study was designed to examine the role that explanatory styles serve as a potential moderator of the association between the perception of high interparental conflict and negative divorce outcomes, specifically depression and anxiety, among emerging adults whose parents previously divorced. The age of the participant at the time of the parents' divorce, as a moderator, was also explored. Living arrangements of the child were examined as a potential mediator. Last, protective factors were evaluated. Using a sample of 242 college students, hierarchical linear regression analyses were employed to assess the nature of the relationships between, and the mediating and moderating roles, of explanatory styles, living arrangements, age at the time of divorce, and protective factors. The overall findings suggest that permanence and pervasiveness significantly moderated the relationship between conflict and depression while pervasiveness supported moderation for anxiety. Contrary to expectations, personalization was not a significant moderator for either anxiety or depression. Surprisingly, among this sample, living arrangements nor the age at the time of divorce appear to significantly be associated with the outcomes of anxiety and depression. The most useful protective factors for emerging adults who experienced divorce as a child were social skills and social support for depression and social support for anxiety. Implications for future intervention to assist children experiencing divorce are provided.
