Özet:
The purpose of this phenomenological, qualitative study was to investigate teachers' perceptions on teaching the whole child and ways in which the administration supports their teachers. Teachers' methods and voices were analyzed to provide additional insights into holistic teaching. The overarching research question was: what are teachers' lived experiences on teaching the whole child. Teaching the whole child can be defined as a way of teaching that maintains students' culture at the forefront while nurturing students' emotional, social, physical, cognitive, and spiritual needs. Culturally sustaining pedagogy and social constructivism were the theoretical frameworks that guided this study. The context of this study was pre-kindergarten to eighth grade teachers in the southeastern part of the United States. Through purposive sampling, six participants were chosen. This study used Jonathan Smith's interpretative phenomenological analysis to code inductively and deductively the observations, documents, interviews, and a journal. Five themes were found in this study: teachers' philosophy of teaching, building relationships, making learning meaningful, student autonomy, and supportive administration. Findings indicated that relationship building is essential to creating mutual trust and respect between teacher and student. Findings also showed that learning should be meaningful, fun, as well as meet the needs of the students. Additionally, teachers' mindsets were self-reflective on their learning and teaching in the classroom. Further, findings indicated that school administration should consider promoting continuous learning and offering constructive feedback to their teachers. Implications and recommendations were provided to inform teachers and school administrators of some possible next steps.
