Özet:
Time perspective is a topic widely investigated amongst psychologists, although sufficient interest has not been given to this topic in relation to old people. The Zimbardo Time Perspective model and Future Time Perspective by Carstensen have been found to be of great relevance to old people.
The current research focus on the study of time perspective in older people, according to the previously mentioned theoretical models. Specific aims of this research are: i) to explore time perspective in Portuguese older people according to Zimbardo's model on time perspective and to Carstensen's Future Time Perspective; ii) to develop a short-form of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory (ZTPI) and to translate and adapt to European Portuguese the Future Time Perspective Scale (FTPS); iii) to understand what sociodemographic variables are associated with time in old people; iv) to know what health variables are associated with time perspective in old people.
For these purposes, data was collected in two distinct samples. In the first Sample we tested the feasibility of time measures and collected data for development of the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory brief and to the translation and adaptation of the Future Time Perspective Scale. On Sample 2, participants filled a research protocol with measures relating sociodemographic data, measures regarding time perspective (ZTPI and FTPS), perceived health, number of diagnoses, instrumental activities of daily living, depression (GDS), anxiety (GAl) and life satisfaction (LSI). Time perspective profiles, and associations between time and health were tested.
Results showed that ZTPI brief presents acceptable psychometric characteristics and that FTPS presents good psychometric characteristics and a factorial structure composed by 2 factors, with which we proposed a conceptual model to interpret results with good potentials. The Portuguese with 65 or more years old people in this sample were more oriented to the Future, followed by Past-positive, then Past-negative, Present-fatalistic and finally Present-hedonistic. Portuguese older people were categorized in the conceptual model of FTP, showing a multiplicity of possibilities. Finally, we found that both ZTPI and FTP are good predictors of health outcomes.
