The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the strategies used by effective pre-kindergarten teachers to teach phonological awareness to pre-kindergarten students in Head Start programs and Title I elementary schools. Participants of the study consisted of four pre-kindergarten teachers from Head Start programs and three pre-kindergarten teachers from Title I elementary schools in the Region V area of Texas. Individual interviews were conducted with all seven participants. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed and themes were identified. Findings indicated the importance of multisensory phonological awareness instruction. The findings also supported the use of assessment as a tool to drive instruction. Another indication of the findings was that preschool age students benefit most from tier two and tier three intervention strategies. The final findings were that the quality of phonological awareness instruction was more important than the quantity. Implications for practice include establishing Professional Learning Communities (PLC) for teacher collaboration, teacher preparation courses that address data analysis for the purpose of planning, the implementation of response to intervention (RTI) strategies in the prekindergarten classroom, and increased professional development and PLC's to address quality phonological awareness instruction.
