Özet:
The objective of this dissertation is to suggest to Christians (in particular, Wesleyans) living in the late-modern world a Christian paradigm of teleology originating from John Wesley's thought. The ethos of the late modern world is the foreground of our contemporary life, and it is characterized by human alienation, modern materialism, individualism, extreme emotivism, techno-culture, and late capitalism. This ethos has functioned as an obstacle for us in seeking the telos of human life, one that is embodied in the community, in our experience, and in our cosmological self-understanding. From this perspective, it is valuable to explore a study of teleology for contemporary individuals living in the late modern world.
The first two chapters of this dissertation engage in in-depth research of historical, philosophical, and theological arguments concerning the goal of human life. Chapters 3, 4, and 5 explore and assess the implications of John Wesley's perspective on happiness as the telos of human life in order to offer a teleological paradigm of Christian moral theology for Christians (in particular, Wesleyans). These chapters engage in an exploration of Wesley's perspective of happiness by virtue of a frame of Christian system or theological loci.
John Wesley was a kind of eudaemonist who was interested in fundamental reason and the purpose of human beings' existence and life. Wesley states, "By happiness I mean, not a slight, trifling pleasure, that perhaps begins and ends in the same hour; but such a state of well-being as contents the soul, and gives it a steady, lasting satisfaction." (Wesley, Sermon 149 "On Love" §III.4, Works, 4:386.) This definition shows that Wesley refused to accept John Locke's hedonistic perspective on happiness. Incontrovertibly, Wesley agreed with the traditional Christian perspective that our real happiness is in God. Therefore, the "state of well-being as contents the soul and gives it a steady, lasting satisfaction" is in God. Furthermore, in Wesley's theology, happiness as the ultimate goal of human life is directly linked to "holiness of heart and life." In the correlation between happiness and holiness, Wesley not only argues the justifiability of exploring human telos but also explains what the transformed life of Christians is.
