Özet:
This study began with the premise that African American parents were actively engaged in the education of their children. This study utilized an Afrocentric Epistemology to understand the role of historical narratives in the contemporary parent engagement practices of African American parents in Southern Arizona. The purpose of this study was to determine how historical narratives, within the wider African American community since the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, manifested in the contemporary parent engagement practices of parents in Tucson, Arizona in 2017. Using in depth interviews from African American parents residing in Southern Arizona, participants' stories were placed into story categories and then narrative themes. Narrative themes were analyzed for historical narratives found in a review of literature around historical engagement practices of African American communities.
Findings from this study indicate that historical narratives were present in the contemporary engagement practices of African American parents. Historical narratives present were enacted for similar reasons across generations within different social and economic environments. Findings in this research showed that the engagement of participants in the education of their children included re-envisioning the historical narratives in a way that allowed them to prepare their children to thrive in the twenty-first century. This study adds to research literature on the engagement practices of African American parents utilizing an Afrocentric research methodology located in Tucson, AZ.
