Class size has been the primary educational policy to enhance student achievement, but it has had inconsistent results. Intrinsic motivation, as well as self-regulatory skills, has been closely identified as characteristic of high achievers. Self-determination theory guided this quantitative correlational study which sought to determine the relationships between class size, class composition, intrinsic motivation, and self-regulation. The study employed latent analysis of demographic and academic characteristics of six classes to classify the classes by composition of student population. Class composition was a criterion variable that was correlated with two variables - intrinsic motivation and self-regulation each measure by independent surveys. The calculated correlational values using Spearman's Rho indicated the extent of correlation between each of the four primary factors of class size, intrinsic motivation, self-regulation, and class composition. The study revealed that class composition is significantly related to motivation and selfregulation that vary indirectly to diversity inside the classroom. Results indicated that class composition was significantly related to achievement in reduced class size, but that class size could not be used as the sole focus of policy to enhance student achievement. Recommendations included integrating considerations of class composition into routine administrative practice for forming classes, employing mastery as the primary determination of student progress, providing explicit instruction in self-regulatory skills, and ensuring professional consultation for educational policy and legislation. The study enhanced understanding of classroom dynamics and explains how the classroom environment influences strong learning factors such as intrinsic motivation and self-regulatory behavior.
