Özet:
The blue-green algae, being autotrophic prokaryotic thallophytic organisms, are well known for their abundance and importance in the tropical rice field environment. They enable the poor farmers to cultivate rice in the same field, year after year, without incurring hefty expenditure on the nitrogenous fertilizers. The blue-green algae are friendly microorganism of the rice field due to their various activities, especially the nitrogen fixing capacity, which improves the paddy cultivation.
The proper utilization of these rice friendly microorganisms in the rice production through inoculation, which is commonly known as algalization, tempted us to look into its occurrence i.e., present variety and variability in the rice fields. It is now called as Biodiversity. The understanding of local population of cyanobacteria; their way of succession in the due course of rice cultivation; their interaction with the various agricultural practices and applied agrochemicals, might increase the efficiency of algalization. However, a lot of work has already been done on the blue green algae but most of which were only confined to the laboratory condition. In this work, an attempt has been made to study all the above-mentioned points, both in-vitro as well as in-vivo conditions.
Thesis entitled "Biodiversity of blue green algae in rice fields around Varanasi" has been divided into six chapters. Chapter I describes the introduction to the subject; Chapter II deals with materials. and methods including the description of the site of investigation and methodology of in-vitro as well as in-vivo investigations. Chapter III is divided into two parts, [A] & [B]. Part A includes the taxonomical descriptions and other details regarding the characteristics of the particular cyanobacterial forms obtained, while Part B deals with the pattern of biodiversity in rice fields. The effect of various natural factors as well as the impact of the way of cultivation practices on the rice-field blue green algal flora have been described in Chapter IV. Chapter V describes the effect of fertilizers/ manures on the cyanobacterial biodiversity, whereas Chapter VI deals with the effect of insecticides on the cyanobacterial biodiversity. The results have been summarized and concluded in Chapter VII and references have been included in the last portion of the thesis.
