Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is used widely as a building material and during manufacture it consumes lot of energy. In India, the cost of energy accounts for >40% of the total cost of cement manufacture. The cost to manufacture cement is expected to increase because of increasing demands for energy. Scientists are attempting to prepare OPC and other binding materials at lower cost by using agricultural and industrial wastes during clinkerization and by making blended cements. These measures decrease the cost of production, conserve mineral resources and protect the environment by beneficial disposal of wastes.
Blended cements are usually blends of portland cement clinker with other finally ground materials (also known as mineral admixtures) that take part in the hydration reactions and there by make a substantial contribution to the hydration products. Formulations of blended cements are associated with conservation of energy, capital, environment and time. There is a continuous decrease of natural resources on one hand and rapid increase of industrial and agricultural wastes on the other hand, which create handling, disposal and environmental problems. Further with increasing demand on specific performance characteristics in concrete such as improved strength, low heat, sulphate resistance, improved impermeability and certain other applications, these minerals have imparted superior qualities to portland cements. The blending component has been traditionally used for improving the properties of fresh and hardened cement as well as saving resource and energy. The qualities and role of it have been considerably varied as the social and economical environments have changed. Recent trend in European countries, US and Russia is towards manufacture of blended cements with more than two components. In this connection ternary blends of OPC-GBFS-Fly Ash called pozzolana metallurgical cements have already been commercialised in some countries. In India too it is high time to commercialise ternary blends with a view to reduce the level of OPC clinker, which by far is the costliest component.
Therefore, it was thought necessary to study the hydration of blended cements (Portland and Non-Portland) so that better understanding about the systems can be made. The present thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter describes the general introduction about the subject matter. In the second chapter hydration of granulated blast furnace slag blended portland cement has been studied. The third chapter describes the hydration of rice husk ash blended portland cement. Effect of different additives on the hydration of anhydrite of gypsum has been studied and the results are described in chapter IV.
