Özet:
The plant kingdom is a virtual goldmine of new chemical compounds waiting yet to be discovered. The sheer flow of information coming out from "flora and fauna" is gigantic. Higher plants have been the source of medicinal agent since time immemorial. Even today, 70 to 80% population of the developing countries depends upon traditional system of medicine for majority of their health needs, with more than 50% of all drugs in clinical use having a natural product origin. Of the world's 25 best selling pharmaceutical agents, 12 are natural product derived agents. Natural products from plants traditionally have provided the pharmaceutical industry with one of its most important sources of "leads" compounds in the search for new drugs and medicines. Over the past two decades, researchers have also turned to many of the traditional folk medicines invariably a cocktail of natural products to uncover the scientific basis of their remedial effects, endeavours which have their root as much in a desire to improve the efficacy as to enhance the ethics of modem medical practices.
There is a resurgence of interests in these systems not only because these continue to provide useful leads for modem pharmaceuticals but also the rate of discovery of effective new modem pharmaceutical has declined. Besides, many infections are becoming resistant to even newer drugs and several disease conditions are also not finding any effective modern pharmaceutical cure. However, the side effects from many of drugs are also motivating the world to take a closer look at the traditional medical systems.
India, being a tropical country, is blessed with diversity of flora and is also having a long tradition of ancient practices like Ayurveda. Ayurveda is essentially a science of promoting longevity, i.e, conquest of death or deferring its onslaught a few years further. Thus, apart from the curative aspects of treatments, Ayurveda is having the practice of rasayana therapy, wherein the restorative and regenerative aspects of health are emphasized. A number of plant drugs were categorized for their rasayana/tonic properties in the indigenous system of medicine.
In the recent years, an exponential rise in the world population, coupled with rapid industrial growth has had a direct impact on the environment and society, thus making man easily vulnerable to stress conditions. These in turn cause disturbances in the normal physiological functioning of the body by increased free radical generation, culminating in hypertension, neurosis, immune suppression and other physical and mental disorders. Global search is on for the development adaptogenic drug that could effectively tone up the disturbed physiological functioning of the subjects effected by the stress problems. The growing awareness, amongst researchers, medical practitioners and general public, regarding the desirability of preventing an infection, rather than treating it at an advanced stage, gave further impetus to the research on plant drugs. However, research on plant drugs is necessary in the Indian context, in order to explore and exploit its herbal wealth.
