Özet:
The British Conservative Party is electorally the most successful party in the democratic world. It is also one of the least studied, and studies which have been undertaken have tended to use a traditional methodology focusing on leading figures and party elites. There are important biographical studies of many Conservative leaders, but the grassroots support of the Party has been largely overlooked. This study focuses on the period 1922-1931, a key moment in the emergence of a new mass electorate, including women voters, and a politically volatile period characterised by intense three-party competition and Labour's rise at the expense of the Liberals. Utilising four constituency case studies, the study explores how in politically, socially and ethnically diverse communities in the north of England the Conservatives were able to retain and consolidate their mass electorate at this time of political flux. The study's particular focus is on popular politics and campaigning methods in the five general elections which fell within this period. Three themes in particular are developed within the comparative framework of the four chosen constituencies: (i) the composition, beliefs and political role of voluntary Conservative groupings, whether or not avowedly 'political': (ii) the backgrounds, careers, resources and political profiles of parliamentary candidates, and the relationships established with their (prospective) constituencies; (ill) the issues, campaigning methods, patterns of party competition and results of the election campaigns themselves. Key themes addressed include the relations of the Conservatives to gender, national and ethnic identities, social class, industrial policy and the experience of unemployment. Key sources include national and constituency party and civic archives, records of relevant social organisations and political rivals, private papers of candidates and local Conservative politicians, and the often extensive local press coverage. Rich sources have been identified for all four chosen constituencies, and provide insights into the Conservative Party at constituency and sub-constituency level.
