Chapter 1 reports the use of two photon vacuum ultraviolet laser-induced fluorescence in the detection of iodine atoms. The quantum yields for the production of I*(2P1/2) and I(2P3/2) atoms after the 248 nm photolysis of a variety of alkyl iodides have been determined. The discussion of the results considers the processes occurring in the photodissociation. Chapter 2 describes experiments on the chemiluminescent reaction of fluorine atoms with inorganic iodides in the gas phase at reduced pressure. Emission from IF*(B3pi0+) was detected and vibrational and rotational product state distributions were obtained. In the light of these and discussion of literature, mechanisms are suggested for the formation of the species in this system. Chapter 3 covers observations of sustained emission from the IF*(B3pi0+) following the 248 nm photolysis of mixtures of a range of alkyl iodides with molecular fluorine. Discussion of the mechanisms involved leads to the suggestion that I*(2P1/2) atoms are important in production of IF*(B). In Chapter 4 the 193 nm photolysis of N2H4 and N2D4 is described, with NH2(A→X) emission being identified following the photolysis of N2H4. This is probably formed in the primary photolysis by direct cleavage of the N-N bond. Time-resolved fluorescence decays have enabled quenching of the NH2(Lambda) fragment to be studied.
