Özet:
The present studies are divided into two main sections. Part 1 consists of survey work undertaken to assess the biological condition of the River Clyde (Lanarkshire, Scotland), a river subjected to severe damage in its lower reaches by various kinds of pollutants. This was done by examining the longitudinal distribution of representative invertebrate bottom fauna from the source of the river to its tidal weir. Invertebrates were collected from 16 sampling stations on the main river (three microhabitats being sampled at each), at three times of the year, to give an estimate of distribution both in space and, to some extent, in time. The collections were taken by means of a time-sampling technique, an appraisal of which is given. The fauna thus collected was identified, to species where possible, and diagrams were drawn of the longitudinal distribution of about 75 species. Physico-chemical data was also compiled for each station (some supplied by the Clyde River Purification Board whose work this study is intended to complement) to see how the results of biological study of a river system agree with its known chemical quality. The ways in which information gathered in this way can be best used are considered by the present author and the merits and limitations of various Biotic Indices presently in use are discussed with reference to the work on the River Clyde. Mention is made of the importance of information on 'natural' factors governing species distribution. Part 11 deals with quantitative and qualitative comparisons of the bottom fauna of two tributaries of the River Endrick, Stirlingshire, Scotland. These burns - Balgair and Gonachan - are markedly different in their constituent faunal quantity and quality and the streams were analysed in respect of these differences, over a period of 24 months in Balgair and 12 months in Gonachan, to see if any reasons for them could be elucidated. Of interest in this study was the use of a time- sampling technique and an assessment of its value in quantitative analysis of bottom fauna is given in an appendix. Sampling was carried out as near to the 15th. of each month as possible; ten separate collections were taken from each burn on sampling days. Animals were collected, sorted, identified, measured and counted, enabling the life history and growth rates of many species to be worked out. The reasons for wide fluctuations in total numbers collected in different burns are discussed fully. Calcium concentration, substrate type, geology and altitude, are all considered as factors relevant to the faunal differences between the two burns. Affinities of species with their occurrence in the main River Endrick are examined. The use of a possible factor for predicting the presence or absence of species is discussed, with reference to both parts of the present work and to work by other authors.
