The presence of slip in composite beams is now recognised as an inherent characteristic and as experimental evidence becomes available, the "uplift" or the tendency of the slab to lift up from the beam at some locations along the beam is also seen to be another characteristic of such beams. During the present investigation this tendency was noted in three of the beams tested. No rational theory has so far been developed which takes into account both slip and uplift in a composite beam. In the first part of the thesis (CHAPTER II), an analysis of composite beams has been proposed which by suitable variations can take into account both slip and uplift of such beams. The method of analysis is basically a flexibility approach and by treating the shear and uplift at each individual connector points as the redundants, a set of simultaneous equations is obtained in terms of the redundant forces. By solving these equations, the unknowns - the shear and uplift forces at each connector may be known. Solutions are to be generally obtained by the use of a computer. The second part of the thesis (CHAPTER III) reports an investigation initiated to study the suitability of High Strength Friction Grip bolts as a shear connector, in a composite steel and concrete beam. The HSFG bolts when under pretension introduce a frictional resistance at the interface which resists the horizontal shear introduced by loading. Eleven push-out specimens and five composite T-beans were tested. The push-out tests were carried out to determine the coefficient of friction of the friction joint, the behaviour of the cast-in-situ and pre-cast slabs and the effect of varying the pretension of the bolt on the joint. Some specimens were also tested to determine the behaviour of the joint under intermittent loading. The results of the tests show that, mu, the coefficient of friction between steel and concrete, has a value varying between 0.51 and 0.61. The average value arrived at was 0.57 which is well above the value of 0.45 as recommended by Professor Sattler from his tests (6). It was also found that variation of pre-tension of bolts had no effect on the value of coefficient of friction. The beam tests indicated that a very high degree of interaction can be achieved in such a beam until the first major slip. Between the first major slip and the ultimate failure of the beam, the stiffness of the beam still showed significant interaction. During the later stage of loading, the bolts came into bearing. However, the overall performance of such a connection was satisfactory and may be used with confidence.
