Özet:
This thesis embodies the results of a pilot study concerned with the trial of an alternative strategy for the measurement of the "sedation threshold". It was thought to be more ethical to measure a subject's sedation threshold during induction of a necessary general anaesthesic for surgical operation in hospital. With the cooperation of the anaesthetist it was concluded that this method was more satisfactory than those previously used. Apart from this initial aim, earlier research into the relationships between Eysenck's (1959) E. and N. scores and measurements of sociability and impulsivity was repeated. Previous results were confirmed; both sociability and impulsivity were found to be correlated positively and significantly with E. A significant negative correlation was obtained between the sociability measure and IM., although the expected positive relationship between impulsivity and N. was less clearly demonstrated. The complex relationship between E. and N. and sedation threshold first described by Rodnight and Gooch (1963) was also confirmed. For those subjects with an above average (\1. score, the extroverts had a lower sedation threshold than the introverts, but for those with a below average N. score, the reverse was true. An attempt to link sociability and impulsivity scores with sedation threshold did not yield significant results, in fact the correlations were in the opposite direction from that predicted from Claridge's (1967) descriptive model of personality. In fact it was decided that some adjustment of this model was necessary to embody the results obtained; such an adjustment is suggested. A further part of the project concerned the relationship between two measurements of pain and the E. and N. scores, and between the pain measures and sedation threshold. Results ii/ere not exactly as predicted from Bonds (1969) and Haslam's (1965) work, in fact, few of the results reached significance. This was thought to be largely due to the small number of subjects involved and further research is suggested.
