Özet:
This thesis is presented by the author under the ordinances for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy from Glasgow University, It represents work carried out by the author at the Department of Natural Philosphy at Glasgow University from October 1967 to October 1971. The first chapter introduces general theoretical and experimental methods of obtaining photoabsorption coefficients for gases and the second chapter reviews the current situation with particular reference to theoretical calculations and experimental measurements of the photo absorption coefficients of the rare gases krypton and xenon and the atmospheric gases oxygen and nitrogen. The third chapter discusses the theoretical equations for the synchrotron radiation emitted by a mono energetic electron. The author's solutions of these equations for the parameters of the Glasgow University synchrotron are given and their practical application for spectroscopic studies is described. The fourth chapter is concerned with the measurement of the photo absorption coefficients for krypton and xenon from 48 ? to 210?. Apart from the synchrotron monitor the apparatus was designed and built by Dr. W. S. Watson with the assistance of the author. The data reduction techniques were first described by Dr. W, S. Watson but the commissioning of the apparatus, data acquisition and discussion of results are entirely the work of the author. The fifth chapter describes the normal incidence monochromator system for the measurement of the photo absorption coefficients of oxygen and nitrogen. This apparatus was designed, built and commissioned by the author who received much helpful advice from Dr. W. McFarlane, Dr. D. T. Stewart and Dr. W. S. Watson. Dr. D. T. Stewart designed the interface between the detector and recording systems of the normal incidence photon detecting equipment. Dr. W. S. Watson made very substantial contributions to the data acquisition. The discussion of the results is the work of the author who acknowledges a useful discussion of the structure in oxygen with Professor W. C. Price of Kings College, The University of London.
