Özet:
This thesis is concerned with the problems and possibilities of using computer assisted learning (CAL) in a tutorial mode in mathematical education. Chapter 1 outlines some problem areas for students in a first year undergraduate mathematics course; in particular a detailed description is given of the problems which students experience with integration by change of variable. To help students to overcome the problems a CAL project team was formed from the Universities of Glasgow and Strathclyde, and its initial thinking on the design of two CAL units on integration by change of variable is described. Chapter 2 discusses the problems involved in transferring these initial ideas on the design of CAL units into a working CAL system, using the computer and terminals at the dispo.sal of the project team. The difficulties and importance of maintaining traditional mathematical notation on the screen of a visual display unit are discussed, as is the question of precisely how students can use a standard typewriter keyboard to type in mathematical expressions on to the screen of a computer terminal. The next question raised is how the computer is to recognise the expression which the student has typed in at the keyboard; various solutions to the answer recognition problem are discussed, and the solution adopted by the project team is described. The chapter concludes with the view that one must consider behavioural objectives when one designs CAL units before solutions can be found to the problems discussed earlier in the chapter. The problems described in Chapter 2 are likely to be encountered by any author of tutorial mode CAL units. Chapter 3 gives a review of the literature in the field of educational evaluation and examines briefly some different evaluation models. This provides a context for the formative evaluation of the two CAL units on integration by change of variable, which is described in Chapter 4. (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.).
