This thesis is concerned with the anisotropy of the shear strength of good quality block samples of strongly layered clay which had been obtained from a depth of 10.76 m at the site of the Pumping Station of the Main West Drainage Scheme of Grangemouth in the County of West Lothian in Scotland. Since there have been few thorough investigations of the anisotropy of shear strength in terms of effective stresses, consolidated drained triaxial tests were made on samples cut from the blocks at various inclinations. The material was found to be almost normally consolidated. Attention was focussed on the peak strength which occurred around 12% axial strain. The effective cohesion c' was found to be small and the effective angle of internal friction&phis;' varied between a maximum of 34.7° for vertical samples to a minimum of approximately 28.5° in samples inclined at approximately 60°.Examination of the structure of the samples., both visually and using optical and Scanning Electron Microscopes, showed that for vertical or horizontal samples there was a failure plane across the layers. At inclinations of 60°, the failure plane appeared to run along the layers. AJ smaller inclinations, e.g. 30°, failure was judged to have occurred by modes involving multiple failure planes and bulging. The previous mathematical models of anisotropy which v/ere available were found to be unsuitable to represent these observations of the anisotropy of drained shear strength. Three new models were therefore proposed. (1) Elliptical distribution of tan&phis; ' viz tan&phis;1' = tan&phis; 2 + (tan&phis; - tan&phis;2) sin2 (i - beta) where i = inclination of samples to the horizontal. tan&phis;1, tan&phis;2 and beta are constants. (2) Modified elliptical distribution of tan&phis;' i viz tan&phis;1 = tan&phis;2 + (tan&phis; - tan&phis;2) sin2 (i - alpha - beta) where alpha = inclination of failure plane to the horizontal and the constants differ numerically from those in (1). In this case the value of tan&phis;' is a function of the inclination of the failure plane. The above two models are modifications of existing theories. (3) A novel form of failure criterion developed from first principles in the form of a linear combination of the components of stress referred to the basis of anisotropy. All the three suggested models were found to represent the data closely. The development of the new theory is set out in Chapter II after the previous theories have been reviewed. The triaxial tests are reported in Chapter III, the structural examination in Chapter IV, and the applicability of both the old and new theories to the observations is discussed in Chapter V. Chapter VI incorporates the conclusions to the thesis. The study of anisotropy arose from a preliminary investigation of the material between 4.79 and 13.32 m depth at the site from which the samples were obtained. The results of this investigation are summarized in Appendix 1.
