Özet:
The aim of the project is to make a preliminary assessment of various existing tests of soil structural stability, in particular to examine their relevance to the design of drainage schemes with both main and secondary treatments. The latter is achieved by comparing the field performance of sites drained at close spacing with that of sites with secondary drainage treatments over widely spaced drains. 32 sites were chosen in the Midlands of Scotland to cover a variety of soils and a variety of climate from 622mm to 1900mm rainfall. An assessment of the field performance of the drains on these sites was made by means of periodic visits to assess surface condition and by consideration of the opinions expressed by the farmers and Drainage Inspectors involved in the schemes. On a few sites only, data were available for the level of the water table on a weekly basis. Prom all these records, a percentage drainage efficiency on an arbitrary scale was allotted to each site. Additional information about each site was obtained by map reconnaissance and from the farmer. A further 4 sites were examined in England and Vales for comparison with the Scottish sites. No field assessments of the drainage were made on these sites. Soil pits were dug on 17 of these 36 sites and samples from the horizons were tested for soil structural stability. Tentative limits were proposed for soil stability for secondary drainage treatments on the basis of these tests, and using these limits the stability results for each site were found to be partly successful in explaining the drainage conditions on the site. Variations in the standard of design, workmanship and maintenance of all sites were found to add a random element to the drainage efficiency. From the field experience on the sites, those with traditional drainage at close spacing were assessed to be an average more efficient than sites with secondary drainage treatments over widely spaced drains. For the moiled sites, drainage efficiency was found to be related to climate, drain spacing and soil stability considered simultaneously. Data from the various tests were compared. Generally much scatter in data plots' was obtained and it was concluded that the tests were measuring different properties to some extent. All sites were written up as individual case- histories. Prom these case-histories it is apparent that the tests do give information on stability useful in drainage design, provided all the factors operating are considered. From the results of this project the Wet Sieving Test appears preferable to the other tests considered, ie The Williams and Cooke Slaking Test, Childs's Tests based on soil moisture characteristics, and various simple classification tests.
