Özet:
Diesel exhaust is widely documented as containing probable carcinogenic and toxic substances. Diesel particulate matter is just one of those substances and due to the risks it imposes on human health, government bodies throughout the world enforce legislation in an effort to reduce it. Road transport is a major contributor to urban air particulate matter, so the reduction of emissions from on-road vehicles will have a huge impact on air quality. The work in this thesis has two aims. The first aim is to model and optimise the prediction of smoke emission on a selection of different types of diesel engine. The second aim is to use the prediction model in conjunction with a Remote Vehicle Monitoring system which transmits data from a vehicle on the road and stores it in a central database. The system provides the end-user with a web-based interface displaying real-time emission levels together with vehicle location. The ability to infer smoke emission levels from routinely monitored engine operating parameters, without the need for specialist or cumbersome instrumentation, would bring with it the possibility of mapping quantitative particulate emission for an engine in a vehicle operating under normal on-road conditions. The pinpointing on a road map of emissions 'hot-spots' would highlight the most polluted areas and help to determine the reasons for them. By using the predicted signal as a feedback loop on-board the vehicle would enable the engine management system to determine abnormally high levels of smoke emission and engine loading and, hence, adjust fuel-injection or schedule recommended maintenance periods. The research for this thesis was carried out in conjunction with the sponsoring company, Per-Tec Limited, a small-to-medium sized commercial enterprise located within the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester. The company's main area of development is an emissions reduction device designed to remove particulate matter from the exhaust of a diesel engine.
